First of all, they're technically the stem of an inverted inflorescence, with tiny flowers inside. The slight crunches experienced when eating a fig are each a flower with a seed, so a fig is actually a bud and is called an infruity (a set of fruits). Therefore, when we eat one fig, we are eating hundreds of fruits.
