The VegHeadz Garden is Blooming and Bearing

The VegHeadz have been working hard to make our garden look it’s best for the open house and plant sale this weekend. Rain is predicted and as much as we need it, we hope it will hold off until after our yearly event is over. Here’s a preview of what you will see if you visit the VegHeadz garden.

Centipedes vs. Millipedes

The sound of an “oh no!“ as my neighbor was looking at the new compost in my garden bed made me turn around. She had found a host of little long multi-legged varmints crawling around the edge of the compost within the bed.  She viewed them as pests that I needed to dispose of.  I wasn’t sure.

First identify.  When submitted to iNaturalist, a variety of opinions resulted about what exactly these were. There was agreement that they were arthropods known as millipedes in the family Paradoxosomatinae, but no specific identification was made. 

Scientists have grouped centipedes and millipedes together for identification because of their many segmented bodies. There are more than 3,000 known centipedes and an estimated 8,000 species. There are upwards of 7,000 known and 80,000 estimated species of millipedes.  The inability to make a specific identification is understandable.

Centipedes and millipedes are quite different in their effect on a garden. Both are beneficial, but in different ways. They are not something you want to destroy.

In addition to their long segmented bodies, they are alike in a number of ways: 
  • Both have poor or non-existent vision and rely on other senses, like the feel of vibrations.
  • The longest species of each measures about six inches in length.
  • Both prefer dark, moist environments such as under stones, leaf litter, logs, bark, or soil crevices.
  • Both are primarily nocturnal, emerging from their hiding places at night to hunt and feed.  
  • Both are beneficial in the garden environment.  
Despite their similarities, their differences are more notable.  The easiest way to identify whether you’re seeing a centipede or a millipede is the number of legs on each body segment. Centipedes have one pair per body segment while millipedes have two. The difference in benefits they provide to the garden are also clear. Centipedes are predators and help to reduce the insect population, while millipedes are decomposers and eat decaying plants and other organic matter, rarely attacking live plants.

More About Emerging Roselle Diseases and Pests

Roselle—TYLCV Positive and Anthracnose


In late September, we posted a warning about a new pest found on the Roselle in the VegHeadz garden. Extension agent Mark Tancig subsequently delivered specimens to the UF Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic for analysis. The analysis report can be seen below. It is not good news. The Roselle is infected by a virus, by a fungus, and two insect pests. The most worrisome part of this report is that these pests and diseases can affect other plants such as cotton, okra, tomatoes, beans, and others.  

Any plants suspected of being infected, either Roselle or any of the other species listed in the report, should be pulled and disposed of in the manner recommended by the lab.

The infestations are not happening just in our garden – the distorted and damaged Roselle leaves have been sighted in other areas of the city as well as in adjoining counties and other areas of Florida.  Additional information can be obtained from the Extension here in Leon County or in your area. This is potentially devastating to home gardeners, market gardeners, and farmers who produce any of the affected species.

Diagnosis: Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) (Begomovirus)
Category: Virus
Comments: Your Hibiscus plant tested POSITIVE for Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV). TYLCV is one of the most important viral diseases of tomato. TYLCV has been reported to have a diverse host range including 49 plant species belonging to 16 families around the world. In the U.S. it is known to infect plants in the solanaceous family, common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), and Ornamentals (including Petunia, Lisianthus, hibiscus, poinsettia and others).


MANAGEMENT

As you know there is no control for viral diseases and the best thing you can do is remove and discard infected plant material away from the site to avoid the spread. It is also important to control the whiteflies to stop the spread of the virus to other host plants nearby.

Most of the recommendations for management of whiteflies are related to tomato crop but some information may be useful and applicable to a poinsettia garden in the link below.

You may also want to contact Dr. Martini (cc here) for simple methods to control whiteflies in garden setting.

 
Diagnosis: Anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides)
Category: Fungus
Comments: Colletotrichum gleosporioides abundant spores were also recovered from leaf and stem reddish spots. The disease is called Anthracnose.

MANAGEMENT
  • Remove and discard infected plant material away from the site.
  • Avoid or reduce overhead irrigation, water early in the morning and avoid stress to the plant.
  • Avoid overwatering.
  • Avoid any stress to the plant.
  • Early spring protectant fungicide may help prevent further infections.

Diagnosis: Two-spot cotton leafhopper (Amrasca biguttula) (syn. Cotton Jassid)
Category: Insect
Comments: Severe damage caused by two-spotted cotton leafhopper (Amrasca biguttula) also known as "Jassid" was also confirmed by our entomologist Dr. Isaac Esquivel. This insect pest, first found late 2024, can cause severe damage on cotton in Florida. It can also attack okra, eggplant, tomato, hibiscus and others.

BUG ALERT!

We’ve been noticing some discolored and deformed leaves on this year‘s Roselle plants. Peggy the VegHeadz “Roselle Queen” has been harvesting calyxes for several weeks.  She was very concerned about the appearance of the plants, particularly since she learned that our garden was not the only place the problem is appearing.  From Peggy:

ROSELLE HAS A NEW PEST AND IT'S BAD. THE TWO-SPOT COTTON LEAFHOPPER HAS ATTACKED PLANTS ALL OVER LEON COUNTY AND IN SOUTH FLORIDA.

Horticultural Agent Mark Tancig had the Roselle plants which are growing in the VegHeadz Garden tested and here are the results.

"It’s an insect! Some new pest of cotton that also gets hibiscus and roselle. Those aren’t whiteflies we saw, it’s these leaf hoppers. I checked today. Good news is the seed isn’t affected. Bad news is few known control options."

Our fruit is okay this year because the insect appeared late in the season, but not sure about next year. With stunted deformed leaves the yields will be more affected next year.

Burn all infected plants or bag for the landfill; do not compost this material!

Ugly Garden Helpers

Our garden helpers aren’t always pretty—at least by human standards.  Consider the ground beetle, a big black ugly bug.  But he doesn’t care if you think he’s handsome, he just goes about his business helping you in your garden. He’s a garden predator, preying on other ‘ugly’ bugs.  Some varieties of ground beetles also eat weed seeds, decompose dead wood, and provide other important environmental services. 

North Florida hosts a variety of ground beetles—ranging from the burrowing Scarites subterraneus to the foliage-hunting Calleida decora and seed‑eating Harpalus species. Their larvae also add to a workforce which can help keep pest and weed populations in check, and break down organic matter.

Ground beetles may not be flashy, but they’re among the most beneficial insects you can welcome into your vegetable garden. These nocturnal predators spend their nights patrolling the soil surface and the base of plants, feasting on a wide range of pests—including slugs, cutworms, aphids—and weed seeds.

Most ground beetles are shiny, black or metallic, and fast-moving. They don’t damage plants and rarely fly, preferring to hide under mulch, rocks, or garden debris during the day. Their larvae are just as valuable, attacking soft-bodied insect pests before they reach your crops.

The larvae don’t look like you’d expect. The big white grubs you see in the soil are not ground beetle larvae – they are the larvae of the scarab beetle. The diet of scarab larvae includes plant roots, causing drought-type symptoms.  Adult scarabs can be distinguished by their club-like antennae. 

Ground beetle larvae are long and dark, and have legs and strong mandibles. They reside in the topsoil and leaf litter, consuming insect eggs, larvae, caterpillars, root maggots, and other soil-dwelling pests—acting as effective subterranean pest patrols.   

Daytime shelter is critical for dark-colored ground beetles, which would quickly cook in hot midday sun. They are active at night or during periods of rainy weather, so you may not see them often, despite their constant presence. Mulches, bunching grasses and established perennial plants can serve as conservation points for these important natural predators.

To encourage them to live in your garden, don’t use pesticides, provide mulch, and avoid disturbing the soil. Incorporate a few perennial vegetables (asparagus, lemon grass, sunchokes, etc.) or vigorous perennial flowers or herbs into your garden; they will provide year-round habitat for ground beetles. Composting sites are also good places for these important beneficial insects. By supporting the habitats they prefer, you’re enlisting a low‑maintenance, pesticide‑free pest control team right beneath your feet.

Wednesday in the Garden

Despite a threatening sky and predictions of rain, quite a few gardeners spent the morning harvesting and weeding.  Nancy, Dave, Cathi and probably others were digging nutsedge (cyperus spp.) around the G beds (4 x 4 raised rotation beds).  A much larger patch beyond where they were working will probably get some herbicide. We only use herbicide when nothing else works, and nutsedge is definitely a case in point. Even then it only knocks this pest back for a season or a year, only to regain its former territory– so annoying.

The garden still looks good even though it’s June and it’s been hot, but not as intensive as it will be later in the summer. The tomatoes in bed A have been trashed.  Many of us were absent from the garden for several weeks leaving us vulnerable to summer invaders.  

The tomatoes were infested by what appears to be army worms, judging from the damage.  The entire plants were removed so they won’t infect the rest of the garden. Dave’s GMO tomatoes farther down in the garden have not suffered the same fate.  That’s gardening – random disasters, hoped for successes.

The major amount of work done in the Forest Garden by many prior to the open house is holding well, and the pathways are free of weeds and looking good. Next to be planted there are winged beans for the arbor and cowpeas and sweet potatoes in any open space.  The beans will add nitrogen to the soil and the sweet potatoes will deter weeds.  These reliable summer cover crops will also provide a late summer harvest.

It’s always a pleasure to spend time in the garden with friends, beautiful plants, interesting finds, and colorful vegetables and flowers.

Restricting the Deer Diet

Some deer live in the woods behind the VegHeadz garden and patrol the area for tasty meals. One of their favorites is Roselle. Last year we managed to mostly discourage them with vinegar soaked rags tied to a line around the Roselle bed.  Keeping the flags fresh and vinegary was time-consuming for Peggy, who bears most of the burden. This week, to keep the deer away from this year’s Roselle,  we installed a 6’ x 50’ chain link fence enclosure in the garden.  The work crew, including Peggy, Mark, Jessica, Glenn, Michael, Peter, Cathy A., Annie, and Claudia did a great job.

Peggy has been growing Roselle starts and will be planting two Roselle plants in the enclosure the first week in May.  That may sound like very few, but last year Peggy harvested gallons and gallons of the beautiful and delicious ruby-colored calyxes from just two plants.  Roselle needs really warm weather before it will take off. We’ve had a relatively cool spring, so there’s no need to plant it earlier.

Peggy and more than a dozen other Master Gardeners are nurturing Roselle seedlings for sale at the Spring Open House and Plant Sale to be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the UF/IFAS Leon County Extension, 615 Paul Russell Road, Tallahassee.  Be there early to get what you want. We quickly sell out of Roselle and many other popular plants.  Thousands of plants, hundreds of varieties, will be offered at the sale, all propagated by Master Gardeners.

Making Way for Spring Crops

 

We’re all anxiously waiting for the time to plant our spring crops. The gardeners in the VegHeadz garden are worrying about the fall and winter crops which are still thriving in their beds and wondering what to do about them. 

If you’ve been growing a cover crop in the space, now is a good time to chop and drop it so that it has time to decompose somewhat before seedlings  and seeds go in the ground.

Crops like onions, collards, arugula, fennel, dill, and parsley, for instance, present a different problem.  Most of these crops will begin to bolt when the weather warms anyway, so cutting them is not a great loss. Or leave some of the ones that bolt and flower to feed spring pollinators. Others will become bug-ridden with pests as garden insects start to wake up and reproduce in the spring weather.  Cut those right away. 

Wait until it’s time to plant and cut healthy ones off at ground level. The decomposing roots will provide nutrients for your new crops and will make way for air and water to reach the new roots. Save only the best plants that are still producing such as onions or cabbages that have heads still expanding, and cut or pull the rest.  Healthy plants can go in the compost bin.

This also provides an opportunity for succession planting. In the space available plant a portion of your spring crops a couple weeks earlier than you usually do, then, as the winter plants start to fade about two weeks later plant some more of the same crop, and then two weeks later, when all the winter vegetables are gone, plant the rest of your crop. That way you can harvest over a longer period of time and take advantage of the most advantageous conditions for the growth of that crop. 

Remember,  a variety of crops planted in the same bed or area provide advantages at any time, and particularly for the new plants. Existing crops can provide shade and protection to new baby seedlings as they get established, and plants that bolt and flower will attract pollinators and predator bugs to your new plants to help control pests and produce fruit.

Nematodes

At the VegHeadz spring planning meeting in January the subject of nematodes came up. 

In the past, we’ve had some  nematode problems in the area where our newer raised beds are located, and it appears they have now made their way up into some of the beds. They don’t move very fast so it has take them several years to get there.

Nematodes are a perennial problem in gardens of the South and many soils are infected. They can never be completely eliminated from the soil once they inhabit an area.   

There are a number of ways to manage them beginning with planting varieties that are resistant to their damage.  Another way is to plant companion plants/cover crops which exude chemicals that either kill or discourage the nematodes.  These companion plants usually furnish additional benefits to the garden.

Wednesday in the Garden

It was a foggy, misty, cool morning with about half of the regular VegHeadz on hand. We did some weeding, harvesting, and neatening up the beds because we won’t be seeing them again for several weeks. Christmas and New Year’s are on Wednesday and everybody’s busy with holiday festivities.  The nice thing about winter gardens is they do a pretty good job of taking care of themselves.  We’ll be seeing you again next year.
