Fall Planting is Under Way

The VegHeadz have been busy planning, preparing, and planting the Fall Vegetable Garden at the Leon County Extension Office.  The Hydroponic Beds have been renewed and lettuce seedlings are in place.  Root crops (carrots, beets, radishes) are peeking out of the ground.  Seedlings of brassicas--broccoli, cauliflower, collards, cabbage, etc., have been planted and covered with a floating row cover to discourage pests and protect them from the burning sun.

Cover crops are still in place in some rows, and in other rows, the cover crops have been cut, dropped in place, and covered with straw to compost on site.  These rows will be planted within the next month with the exception of the rows designated for potatoes and spring peas which will be planted in January or February.  We all love the period of expectation as we eagerly await the beautiful and delicious results of our labors.
