One of our regular blog followers, Trish Taylor, reminded us of another element of deer IPM—trap plants.
The key is to determine which plants deer like better than the greens and other vegetables they are currently damaging and plant these preferred varieties in an accessible place away from the garden.
The plants we currently use as cover crops such as crimson clover and other clovers, grains such as oats, rye, and triticale, and winter peas are all very attractive to deer.
Perhaps we need to plant a mixed cover crop patch or create a cover crop border around the garden to lure the deer away from our crops.
