Kwan’s new pergola for our East side garden entrance is nearing completion. He will be adding climbing roses which will provide a beautiful welcome as we come to the garden to work. Thank you Kwan!
Harvesting and weeding are the main events throughout the rest of the summer. As crops are depleted, it will be time to plant summer cover crops in preparation for the fall season. Southern cowpeas are always a good choice.
We have a number of sunflowers varieties in the garden, and they are busy doing their job. We saw stink bug nymphs and adults on sunflower heads this week. Peter knocked many of them into a bucket of soapy water. Sunflowers act as trap plants to attract this type of bug away from our vegetable crops, and every bug killed in the soapy water means less bugs in the future as we interrupt their reproductive cycles.
