Nematodes

Brenda’s carrots
Master Gardener Brenda Buchan asked what was happening to her carrots.  The VegHead consensus was Root Knot Nematodes.  This excellent article from Alabama A&M Extension tells about Nematodes and ways to control them.

Evidence of a nematode infestation can appear on the roots of many vegetables.  Keep an eye out for them,  They usually don’t kill the plants, but they will reduce yields and deform some plants.

By the way, the carrots can still be eaten
