Farm Tour Success

Last Saturday, October 15, was a beautiful day and we welcomed many guests into the VegHeadz garden for the annual farm tour. Even though early Fall is a down time in any garden, the visitors enjoyed touring the many beds  and the edible forest garden, and sampling Roselle tea.

Everyone talked about the garden products we had to give away – loofah gourds to be made into sponges or used for seeds, Roselle calyxes to make tea or sauces or jelly, sugarcane to plant or chew, bay leaves to dry or use fresh for seasoning or incorporate into herbal teas, Jerusalem artichokes to eat or plant, as well as many different types of fall seeds.

Also on hand were the Apalachee Beekeepers selling honey harvested from the hives adjacent to our garden.  It’s beautiful dark wildflower honey created from the nectar harvested by the bees from wildflowers in the area, our pollinator plants, and vegetable blossoms. Honey from local sources is purported to be very beneficial in combatting allergies.

Babies Breath Garden Circle also joined us to sell their beautifully packaged handmade products — gardeners hand wash and herbal vinegars.  Proceeds are destined to aid local charities.

Rachel Mathes was on hand all day with lots of information about gardening and plants   She was also giving away the North Florida Vegetable Gardening Guide to anyone who donated a jar of peanut butter for local food pantries.

New seedlings are in the ground and soon cool weather and rain will come along to urge them on their way to a bountiful fall crop.
