Another Good Wednesday in The VegHeadz Garden

Cathy shares favorite seeds and pickles
Today was a big harvest day. Over 80 pounds of beautiful produce was harvested and subsequently delivered by Cathy Alfano to the Kearney center for the homeless. Our bounty included corn, eggplant, tomatoes, beans, and cucumbers. We take turns with vegetable deliveries and last week Peggy McDonald took another generous harvest to feed the homeless.

Cathi Wilkinson WOWed us with things from her garden.  She shared information about seeds she has had particularly good luck for Zinnias.  The beautiful blooms looks like chrysanthemums. We had a drawing to determine who took home the Zinnia bouquet Cathy brought.  Janis was the happy winner.  Cathy also shared Bronze Torch tomatoes and her homemade garlicy refrigerator pickles.  The Bronze Torch tomatoes look similar to Brads Atomic Grape, which many of us have grown, but they’re slightly larger and many of us thought more tasty. Well worth a try.

We also enjoyed a visit from Extension Agent Trevor Hylton who was instrumental in getting the garden started more than ten years ago.

Janis and Trevor reminisce about the
origin of the VegHeadz Garden.

The Hugelkultur bed is done and two weeks ago Peter planted a cover crop of Buckwheat to begin building a microbe community for fall crops   He returned to the garden a couple days later to find the bed covered with a flock of birds. When he inspected it last week there were very few seedlings appearing   Apparently the birds had a feast   This week he replanted and covered the bed with a row cover which will remain until the seeds have germinated and we can reveal the new baby plants to the world—and the birds

Peggy and Peter finish covering
the Hugelkultur bed.

We closed out the day by listening in to a beekeeping demonstration for 4-H Campers on site this week. There’s always something going on at the garden.

Peg and Kwan join 4-H campers
To learn about bees.
