The Three Pillars of Food Security - Availability, Affordability, Accessibility

We've all heard of food deserts in the heart of big cities--no grocery stores, no gardens, nowhere but convenience stores to supply nutrition.  Would it surprise you to know that the food deserts in the Big Bend area are mostly in rural areas.  No grocery stores, no farmers' markets, no public transportion.  These topics and many, many more are covered in a preliminary just released.  This new study of food production and availability in our area by the Florida State University Department of Urban and Regional Planning sheds a bright light on the real food situation in Tallahassee and the surrounding area.   When we speak of "healthy" food, we often think of produce -- fresh fruits and vegetables -- but this study covers not only produce, but grains, meat, dairy, and seafood.  Is our food supply sustainable?--read the study and see.

See the study findings and much more information about the state of the food supply in our area at  https://cms.leoncountyfl.gov/portals/7/docs/FoodForUs.pdf .
